Anti-Inflammatory Practice: Grounding

Updated: Apr 14

Yesterday, My husband, Paul, and I went to a local park, removed socks and shoes, and participated in the recentering practice of grounding. Now, I know what you are thinking ... "What about the bugs?!" Trust me when I say, I deeply - on a cellular level - understand! Nevertheless, in this season of my life, I am diligently moving my mind into my heart - drenching my analytical and logical mind in the calming waves of presence. As I do so, I am reviving my relationship with play and fun, thus making room for my inner child to thrive!

What is Grounding?

Grounding is the simple practice of having direct skin contact with the Earth’s surface by walking barefoot, sitting, or lying on the ground outside. This time-honored practice allows us time and space to connect to the Earth and its natural rhythms, sounds, and smells. In a time when so many of us rush through each day from home to the office and back again, we can easily go several days without being outdoors or feeling connected to the rhythms and energies of the natural world around us. Maintaining a connection to the earth we call home is vital for our overall health and well-being, and research suggests that a disconnect from environmental rhythms may be a major contributor to physiological dysfunction and unwellness. [1]

How to Ground

Simply walk barefoot on a natural earth surface like grass, sand, or dirt - you can also stand barefoot on stone, brick or unsealed concrete as it sits directly atop one of these earthy surfaces. Like your body, these are conductive surfaces and the Earth's energy flows through them and into your body. Wood, asphalt (pavement), and vinyl, on the other hand, are not conductive. [2]

Benefits of Grounding

The following are research based benefits associated with the practice of grounding [3]:

  • Reducing inflammation

  • Reducing pain, including chronic pain

  • Regulating the nervous system and cortisol levels

  • Protecting the body from disruptive electromagnetic fields (EMF)

  • Reducing jet lag

  • Improving blood flow

  • Restoring energy

  • Improving sleep

  • Faster wound healing

  • Regulating immunity

  • Improving mood

  • Reducing blood viscosity (lowering risk of blood clots)
